Inclusion Frequently Asked Questions
What is WDSRA?
The Western DuPage Special Recreation Association (WDSRA) is a cooperative extension of nine member Park Districts. WDSRA provides a variety of recreation and leisure services for individuals who have special needs. Communities served by WDSRA include: Bloomingdale, Carol Stream, Glen Ellyn, Naperville, Roselle, Warrenville, West Chicago, Wheaton and Winfield.
What are inclusion services?
WDSRA and its member districts believe that all individuals should be provided with leisure opportunities that allow for performance at their highest level of ability. We understand that not every individual who has a special need desires WDSRA programming. In cooperation with our member districts, WDSRA staff will assist and advise any resident who is interested in participating in a program being offered by one of the WDSRA member park districts.
Who is eligible for inclusion services from WDSRA?
Any individual who registers for a WDSRA member park district program and has a special need is eligible to receive inclusion services.
What types of services are available?
WDSRA will provide the type of support deemed necessary for successful participation in a park district program. Supports may include: training with the member district staff, consultation with the individual and that individual’s family members, activity modification, behavior management support, sign language interpreters, observation and evaluation, the provision of adaptive equipment, and the provision or a support staff member. The type and level of support is individualized for each situation.
How does WDSRA’s inclusion process work?
The inclusion process is fairly simple:
- Register for the park district program of your choice.
- Mark the appropriate “special accommodations” section on the registration form.
- It would then be helpful to contact a member of the WDSRA Inclusion Team at (630)681-0962.
- The inclusion staff members, in cooperation with you or your family member, will discuss the type of inclusion support needed and make necessary accommodations
- The program will begin with necessary accommodations in place
- An inclusion staff member will periodically observe the program to provide support and answer questions.
- Communication between the WDSRA Inclusion staff, the park district staff and the individual and/or family is continued throughout the cooperative inclusion process.
Is there a limit to the number of programs one can register for per season and receive inclusion support?
There is not a limited number of programs per season in which WDSRA will provide inclusion support. WDSRA staff will make needed accommodations in each program every season for individuals who have special needs.
What is the cost for inclusion services from WDSRA?
Inclusion services are provided at no cost through WDSRA and the member park districts. Participants must pay the park district program fees, but there is no additional cost for inclusion support.
Who do I contact if I have questions?
If you have questions or need assistance regarding the program or the program content, please contact the park district. If you need inclusion assistance please contact the WDSRA office, (630)618-0962, and ask to speak to a member of the inclusion team.
