Adapted Sports program serve individuals with physical and visual disabilities. The WDSRA Adapted Sports program is designed to give the recreational or competitive athlete the ability to participate to his/her fullest extent possible.

What sports are offered?WDSRA offers a variety of sports to match the skills and ability levels of any athlete.

  • Member of the Windy City Warriors Wheelchair basketball team takes shot.Wheelchair Basketball — The Warriors are one of the best Junior Wheelchair Basketball teams in Illinois. The Warriors have won 6 IHSA state titles, placed 2nd in ‘09 at the National Wheelchair Basketball Tournament in the Junior Varsity Division, and have placed as high as 6th at Nationals in the Varsity Division.
  • Wheelchair Softball — The Warriors are one of the best Junior Wheelchair Softball teams in the country. They took 2nd place at the national tournaments ’10.
  • Wheelchair TennisFor people who want to learn how to play wheelchair tennis or just want an opportunity to hit with others.
  • Handcycling — Take advantage of the great bike trails around the area. Handcycling is a great way to exercise as well as have the opportunity to ride bikes with your friends/family. At this time it requires that you have your own handcycle.
  • Track and Field — Runs spring and summer. WDSRA has a few racing wheelchairs that people can use to practice. If you have a physical disability but are still able to run, you can do this program.
  • Bocciaruns year round and is geared for individuals who use a power wheelchair.Most of our athletes have Cerebral Palsy and use adaptive equipment to play this game. Boccia is played indoors and is similar to the popular outdoor game of Bocce.

Who is eligible to participate? — Anyone who has a physical disability or impairment that may include but is not limited to amputations, muscle disorders, traumatic brain injury, stroke, spina bifida, and cerebral palsy.

Do I have to be in a wheelchair to participate?Many of our athletes have disabilities that affect their lower body but they are still able to walk with adaptive equipment.  For some sports these athletes utilize a wheelchair to create an equal playing field.

Do I have to have my own wheelchair to participate?WDSRA has wheelchairs and other adaptive equipment for those interested in testing out a new sport.

What is the difference between Adapted Sports and Special Olympics? — WDSRA’s Adapted Sports program is for individuals with physical and visual disabilities only.  Special Olympics is for those individuals with cognitive or mental impairments.
