Goals of Rec & Roll

Leisure Education Rec & Roll participants visit the Field Museum.

  • Gain a better understanding of how to independently spend leisure time when not engaging in scheduled activities
  • Learn to connect with friends on the phone, via email, make a reservation and meet up with their friends for social time
  •  Monthly partnerships with SEASPAR’s day program and Belmont Village assisted living gives the opportunity to have a larger social network

Daily Living Skills

  • Teach basic living skills including cleaning, organizing, cooking, letter writing, making change and paying for items at a store, shopping and taking public transportation

Weekly Field Trips

  • Weekly field trips that include destinations that are both fun and educational
  • Tour local businesses, festivals, grocery stores, banks, health food stores
  • Attend cultural events such plays, concerts and art displays

Service Projects

  • Give back to the community
  • Participants have helped at local businesses, recycling centers, food pantries, City Hall, animal shelters, WDSRA events and events by The Naperville Exchange ClubRec & Roll participants work on keeping computer skills sharp.

Computer Training and Skills

  • Learn how to use a computer system independently including the use of the Internet, email, and printing
  • Write a newsletter where each student has a section where they report on movies, recipes, interview and gossip

Fitness

  • Become more physically fit with daily exercise
  • Weekly exercise includes swimming, bowling, walking, nature hikes or active games and sports.

Music Therapy & Dance

  • Move freely in a non-judging setting and teach specific dances that they can enjoy
  • Music is used daily for relaxation, meditation and during quiet projects

Animal Therapy

  • Increase relaxation, provide socialization and encourage proper animal care for pets at home
  • Research shows that animal therapy promotes blood pressure reductions, and an overwhelming sense of well-being; thus giving participants even more reason to feel happier, healthier and more alert
  • Baci & Gordy visit regularly

Art Therapy

  • Expressing yourself through art, an art therapist can help you see things about yourself that you otherwise may not have comprehended

Cooking

  • Learn to make healthy choices and alternatives in recipes and while dining out
  • During the summer there are regular visits to the farmer’s markets to purchase fresh fruits and vegetablesRec & Roll participants learn gardening skills.
  • Participants take quarterly healthy cooking classes

Gardening

  • Create and maintain a community garden plot
  • Garden items will be incorporated into cooking projects, arts and recipes.
  • Monthly partnerships volunteering and working with “We Grow Dreams” and the UIC master gardening program
