An old man walked up a shore littered with thousands of starfish, beached and dying after a storm. A young man was picking them up and flinging them back into the ocean. "Why do you bother?" the old man scoffed. "You're not saving enough to make a difference." The young man picked up another starfish and sent it spinning back into the water. "Made a difference for that one," he said.

Volunteer Opportunities

It’s true that YOU have the ability to make a difference in the world everyday that you wake up! Why not make a difference in the lives of others by choosing to volunteer in the community setting of Special Recreation? Volunteers are vital to WDSRA for so many reasons. With the help of caring volunteers WDSRA is able to keep the program fees affordable to our participants and offer closer staffing ratios and one-on-one instruction where needed. Volunteers also help us to increase our programming capacity and the overall quality of WDSRA programs.

WDSRA Volunteers are able to select the level of their involvement among a variety of programs according to their abilities and interests and usually work an average of 1-10 hours a week. Volunteers must be 14 years of age or older. If under the age of fourteen, it is required that an adult 18 years old or older volunteer together with that individual. Everyone is encouraged to complete a volunteer request form! Sign up or complete a request form with your family, friends, business or co-workers.

You will receive a postcard within 1-2 weeks upon submission of your request form to confirm that we have received it. From there phone calls will be made to selected candidates for the interview process. Upon approval of your request form, you will receive a packet in the mail or via e-mail with further instructions. Feel free to stop by our Carol Stream office to complete a form in person or to drop off a completed request form.

Volunteer request forms are accepted year round. Please do not get discouraged if you do not receive a call for an interview right away. WDSRA will retain your request form on file until a position requiring your preferences and qualifications is available. If you do not receive a postcard, packet in the mail or phone call after submitting your request form please feel free to contact Wendy M. Craven to check on the status of your request form.
